The E-Mail Climate Today

The battle that is being waged between the aggressive E-mail marketers (sometimes called Spammers) and many Internet Users is causing a great deal of harm to the total marketing community using the Internet. The Hoopla that is presented against Spamming - a term that has yet to be quantitatively defined - may cause the demise of the lowest cost media to present goods and services to the public. The losers in the end will be (1) the public who always will be the one to pay the cost of more expensive marketing and (2) the small entrepreneur who has great products and services but cannot afford to extensively market them to the public.

Some people define Spamming as unsolicited junk mail - others simply as any unsolicited bulk E-mail. Some object to "Spamming" and don't even know why. There are many articles on the Internet such as "Get That Spammer", "Can Anyone Stop Spam", etc. These have served only to create confusion and unfair retribution since "Spamming" is now only defined in the eye of the beholder or as parroted by those who have been propagandized. There are no Standards nor any laws against unsolicited E-mailing. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sending unsolicited faxes is illegal, but sending unsolicited E-mail is not.

This climate, however, is the reason that you must be careful when using E-mail as a marketing tool. Any complaint to your ISP, valid or not, can cause you a great many problems. Among them termination of service by your ISP. Not good. Particularly after you have invested many dollars in development so you could use this marketing media.

We are not defending nor condemning any opinion on this matter. To avoid problems, we are suggesting that you put effort into learning more about E-mail and apply some common sense and professionalism to your E-mail programs.
