| A Brief Tip When Writing Press Releases |
| When writing your
releases, remember that the first person you must impress with your press release copy is
the Newspaper's Press Release Editor. Your release must have a catchy headline as well as
a first paragraph that tell this Editor that something of significance has occurred and
will add stature to their paper if they publish this news. Make your copy short as possible and address the five Ws (who, why, what, when and where) in your first paragraph - if possible. You must immediately stimulate the attention of the Editor and quickly get the gist of your message across so that the remainder of your copy has a chance to be reviewed. For instance: avoid starting your ad with "Jones & Jones wish to announce today that ...". It is much more powerful to start with "Today Internet Entreprenuers increased their sales by 500%. A new innovative .." Remember, Remember, Remember that your first reader is that Editor - convincing the Editor that you have something worthy of printing in their publication is the major purpose of your opening and content. Of course it must also serve your purposes, but if it does not get printed your efforts were for naught. |
